2. Why should we pick up the towel of service?

I. IT IS THE LOVING THING TO DO.

A. Consider the love of Jesus for His disciples (Jn. 13:1; Rm. 5:6-8; Eph. 3:19).

B. Consider the love of Jesus in spite of our weaknesses (Jn. 13:11; Mt. 5:44; Jn. 13:7; 1 Cor. 13:4).

C. “Jesus Loves Me” calls us to serve others (Jn. 3:16; 1 Jn. 3:16-18; Rm. 12:9-13;
1 Jn. 4:19).

II. IT IS THE ONLY WAY TO TRUE GREATNESS.

A. Jesus taught His disciples that greatness comes in servitude (Jn. 13:6; Lk. 14:11; Jn. 13:4-5; 1:27).

B. Peter’s reaction to the Lord washing his feet (Jn. 13:6-11 cf. Mk. 14:30; Mt. 16:16, 22; Jn. 18:17, 25).

C. “Foot-washing” is not the subject under consideration (Jn. 13:12-17; Mt. 20:26-28).

D. True happiness is found in humble, loving service to the Master (Jas. 4:10; 1 Pet. 5:6; Mt. 23:12; Ph. 2:5-11).

CONCLUSION:

A. We must take up the towel of service.
1. It is the loving thing to do.
2. It is the only way to spiritual exaltation.

B. We must obey the lessons of love and service Jesus has shown us (Jn. 13:17).

C. Invitation
