Giant stalagmites rise from the floors of many of the great caves across America. This amazing phenomenon is produced by the constant dripping of single drops of water. Each drop fall, evaporates, and leaves behind a tiny deposit of sediment. A little at a time, this sediment builds up until an impressive mound is left behind.

Our lives might be compared to these stalagmites. Each rejection of the gospel leaves behind a tiny drop of indifference. With each rejection, response becomes more difficult. This “hardening of the heart” is that about which the writer of Hebrews warns, saying, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion” (Hb. 3:15, ESV).

Though often applied to others, this lesson is urgently needed in the life of every Christian. There are changes needed in each of us to bring our lives into greater conformity with the teachings of our Lord. Opportunities for change come our way on a daily basis (2 Cor. 6:2). But, turning the page of the calendar into a new year, often creates a moment of reflection and self-examination. Why not use this as your impetus for making needed changes in your life? Whether we make them at the beginning of the year or not, resolutions are necessary for all who are striving after the image of Christ.
