A MAN WHO DISTURBED PEOPLE

INTRODUCTION:
A. The coming of Christ into this world is perplexing (Lk. 23:5; Jn. 3:19).
B. We prefer to get along with people (Rm. 12:18); but change can be disturbing.
C. Consider some things in the life and teaching of our Lord that disturb people.

I. HIS MANNER OF LIFE DISTURBS SINNERS.

A. We tend to feel ill-will toward those who do what we cannot or will not do
(Is. 53:3; 1 Pet. 2:22; Acts 10:38).
B. “Everybody sins, so what’s the use of trying?” (Hb. 4:15: Lk. 5:8; Mt. 5:3).

II. HIS TEACHING DISTURBED THE RELIGIOUS LEADERS OF HIS DAY.

A. Christ’s teaching was revolutionary (Mt. 7:28-29).
B. The Jewish leaders resented the teaching of Jesus (Mk. 12:34; Gal. 4:16).

III. HIS DEMANDS DISTURB THE INDIFFERENT.

A. Jesus demands commitment of His followers (Lk. 14:33).
B. There is no half-way discipleship—Jesus demands it all (Mt. 10:37; 6:33).
C. For many, the demands of Jesus are disturbing (Col. 1:18; Mt. 16:24).

IV. HIS DEATH DISTURBS THE SKEPTIC.

A. How could Jesus be the Savior of the world? (Jn. 4:42; Rev. 17:14; 1 Cor. 1:18).
B. Skeptics still exist in our world today (Eze. 18:20; Rm. 6:23; 3:23; Hb. 2:9).
C. Some scoff at the idea of death being a means of justification (Hb. 7:25; Rm. 1:4;
6:23).

V. HIS CHURCH DISTURBS THE WORLD.

A. The apostles led the early church in carrying out the Great Commission (Acts 2:41, 38, 47; 5:14; 6:7).
B. The growth of God’s kingdom is disturbing to many (Acts 5:28; 8:4; 28:22; Col. 1:23)
C. The church of Christ disturbed people (Eph. 4:15).

CONCLUSION:

A. It is through preaching the gospel of Christ that folks are disturbed today.
B. The gospel also contains many wonderful promises (Mt. 11:28-30).
C. What is Jesus to you? A source of peace or disturbance?
