Introduction:

A. Text: Psalm 61:1-4

B. Words of comfort (Ps. 23:1 cf. 18:2)

I. Rock

A. Special attention to rocks (Josh. 3-4; 1 Sam. 7:12; 1 Sam. 17)

B. Descriptive words (Ps. 61:3-34; 94:22; 18:1-3; 62:2)

C. Hebrew terms: “Sur” and “Sela” (Ex. 33:18-23; Mt. 7:24-27; Obad. 3-4)

II. Trust

A. “The rock is too high for me” (Ps. 40:1-2; 27:5; Prov. 3:5)

B. Three things necessary for trust to be firmly planted in our hearts:

1. “A Rock” must become “the Rock” (Ps. 61:2; 94:22).

2. “The Rock” must become “my Rock” (2 Samuel 22).

3. “My Rock” must become “my only Rock” (Deut. 32).

C. Trust in the Rock is our most important ongoing responsibility (Is. 26:3-4; 71:3).

III. Jesus

A. Water from the rock (Ex. 17; Num. 20; Dt. 8:15; Neh. 9:15; Ps. 78:15-16, 20; 105:41; 114:8; Is. 48:21)

B. How is Jesus connected to “the Rock”? (1 Cor. 10; Matt. 16).

C. If Jesus is our Rock, then we must trust Him in all things (Eph. 1:22-23; Col. 1:18; Mt. 28:18; Rev. 17:14).

Conclusion:

Is Jesus your only Rock?
