Introduction:

A. Text: Mark 10:32-45

B. Jesus did not promise an easy path to glory.

C. Three things we need to know in following Jesus:

I. We Must Know Where We Are Going. (Mk. 10:32-34).

A. Jesus knew that His way back to the Father would lead to the cross (Acts 2:23).

B. We must know that where we are going leads to a cross (Mk. 8:34).

C. What is the cross?
1. A symbol of surrender (Mt. 26:53; Jn. 10:18; Lk. 23:46)
2. A symbol of death (Rm. 6:23; 3:23; 1 Pet. 3:18; 1 Cor. 5:7)
3. A symbol of freedom (Hb. 2:14-15; Rm. 6:7, 22)

II. We Must Know Why We Are Going (Mk. 10:45).

A. It is our challenge to focus on His mission (Lk. 19:10).

B. Jesus described His purpose for coming (Mk. 10:45; Jn. 10:10; 6:38).
1. Paying our ransom…sets us free
2. Giving His life…delivers us from death
3. Doing the Father’s will…demonstrates surrender

C. Christ’s life demonstrates perfect balance.

III. We Must Know What We Must Do In Order To Get There (Mk. 10:43-44).

A. Jesus practiced humility.
1. Obedience (Hb. 5:8)
2. Suffering (Mk. 10:38-39, 33-34; Lk. 22:42; Ph. 2:5-8)
3. Service (Mk. 10:43-45; Jn. 13:12-15)

B. Pride is our greatest obstacle (1 Pet. 2:21-23).

C. Do you know what you need to know to be His disciple? (Rm. 6:3-7).
