THE EVERLASTING ANVIL

In the realm of logic there is what is called the “Law of the Excluded Middle.” Simply stated, it says that a thing either is or is not; there is no middle ground. For instance, a line is either straight or it is not straight; it cannot be both. Jesus used this principle when He said that a man is either with Him or against Him (Mt. 12:30). Applied to the Bible, we observe that the Bible is either the word of God or it is not. It cannot be both. If the Bible is not the word of God, then it must be the word of man.

While the Bible claims to be the verbally inspired word of God (2 Tim. 3:16-17), modernists have sought to persuade us that the Bible merely “contains” the word of God. That is to say, a person must select those portions of the Bible which he or she believes to be the inspired word of God and discard the rest. But, this not only circumvents the “Law of the Excluded Middle”, it is also a blatant attempt to change God’s word to fit our own selfish life style. We must resist all such efforts to belittle the authority of the Bible. Every word is God-inspired (Mt. 4:4; 1 Cor. 2:11-13), not just those words which suit our fancy.

Satan has sought to destroy the word of God through every means at his disposal. When political oppression and persecution fail, he resorts to the “higher criticism” of “higher education.” But, like the anvil which has worn out many a hammer, the word of God endures forever against the onslaught of fools fighting against the Lord. Jesus said, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words shall not pass away” (Mt. 24:35).
