Belief in God is the most ennobling quality of man. Historically speaking, where belief has wavered, sin has run rampant. Many nations have gone into oblivion through the moral degeneracy brought on by unbelief. On the other hand, belief in God has produced strong moral character, a firmly established family structure, and a general atmosphere of social benevolence.
Faith in God is produced, in part, by observing His creation. The psalmist says, “The heavens are telling of the glory of God; and their expanse is declaring the work of His hands” (Ps. 19:1). The apostle Paul went so far as to say that one has no excuse for unbelief in view of God’s work as seen in creation (Rom. 1:20).
It is difficult for one who has been enlightened by the Word of God to understand the atheistic mind. David writes, “The fool has said in his heart, ‘There is no God’” (Ps. 14:1). In light of eternity, it is foolish to live as though God does not exist. Abraham Lincoln said, “I never behold the stars that I do not feel that I am looking in the face of God. I can see how it might be possible for a man to look down upon the earth and be an atheist, but I cannot conceive how he could look up into the heavens and say there is no God.”
We must not only believe that there is a God, we must live according to His will. In the process of instilling faith in others, there is no substitute for letting them see Jesus shining through us and His Word making its home in our hearts.
