“Some folks know more and more about less and less until they know everything about nothing at all.” While many have made knowledge the sole pursuit of their lives, the accumulated knowledge of man is still infinitesimally small compared to the knowledge of God. The more we learn, the more we should come to realize the breadth and depth of what we do not know.
There is a vast difference between human and divine knowledge. God says, “‘My thought are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways,’ declares the Lord. ‘For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts’” (Isa. 55:8-9). Wouldn’t it be wonderful to know the wisdom that is from God?
Knowing Jesus is the key to accessing the wisdom of God (1 Cor. 1:30). Paul spoke of Christ’s glory in the book of Colossians, saying, “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created by Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together” (1:15-17). When we know Christ, we know both the wisdom and power of God (Jn. 14:9).
While knowledge is important, we must not pursue the knowledge of the world to the neglect of the wisdom that leads to eternal life. Worldly wisdom will not help us come to know God (1 Cor. 1:21). There is nothing more tragic than living without a knowledge of God. But, God has revealed Himself through the things He has made (Rom. 1:20). In addition to His creative wonders, God sent His Son as a living example to show us His love and compassion. We can read about His priceless gift in the pages of His inspired word, the Bible.
When life is over and we stand before God in judgment, it will not matter how well we did in our quest for earthly wisdom but how intimately we have come to know the Savior. Pursue knowledge and learn all that is possible; but do not forget the wisdom that God provides through His inspired word.
