We live in a day when commitment is considered old fashioned and moral values are spurned as prudish. As a result, clouds of confusion have darkened the minds of many. Things once considered “taboo” by society at large now find wide acceptance. Even Christians are sometimes caught up in the deception. In such a world as this, God’s people must “contend earnestly for the faith once for all delivered to the saints” (Jude 3).
As society’s moral standards continue in their decline, we must remain true to the standards of God’s word. Rather than being swept away by the tide of ungodliness, we must shine forth as lights of truth and righteousness. In doing so, we prove ourselves to be “blameless and innocent, children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom [we] appear as lights in the world, holding fast the word of life…” (Ph. 2:15-16).
When so many believe that truth is whatever a person wishes it to be, we must hold on to Jesus. He is “the way, the truth, and the life” (Jn. 14:8). His truth alone will set us free (Jn. 8:32). In spite of being branded as “narrow-minded” or “judgmental”, we must fight “the good fight of faith” against evil forces seeking to undermine the simple, soul-saving message of the gospel (Rom. 1:16; 1 Tim. 6:12).
Both in what we preach and in how we live in response to that message, we must always conend earnestly for the faith which has been once-for-all-time delivered to us.
